Sunnah-Based Step-by-Step Process for the First Proposal Visit
STEP 1 — Initial Inquiry Done Privately
Before anyone visits:
The groom’s family quietly asks basic questions about:
- the girl’s character
- deen
- family background
- education and worldview
The bride’s family does the same:
- about the groom’s deen
- manners
- work
- temperament
Purpose: To avoid unnecessary meetings and protect everyone’s dignity.
STEP 2 — Fix a Simple and Small First Visit
After both families feel comfortable:
Agree on:
- a simple meeting at the bride’s home
- a small group (maximum 3–4 people from groom’s side)
- a short visit (about 30–45 minutes)
- no extravagance
- no display
- no food pressure (light tea is enough)
Purpose: A clean and calm environment for a focused meeting.
STEP 3 — Arrival with Humility (No Show-Off)
When the groom’s family arrives:
- No large procession
- No crowd
- No cameras
- No comparisons
- No demand for “seeing the house”
- No unnecessary conversation
Sunnah spirit: Modesty, simplicity, gentleness.
STEP 4 — Basic Introduction Between Families
Both sides greet respectfully.
Topics should be light and purposeful:
- background
- values
- simple conversation
Avoid:
- grilling the girl
- personal or embarrassing questions
- showing off achievements
- bringing up dowry
This creates a respectful environment, not an interview.
STEP 5 — The Groom Sees the Bride (Sunnah Permission)
The girl is invited respectfully—NOT displayed.
She enters:
- modestly dressed
- with dignity
- without heavy makeup
- without being surrounded by a crowd
Who may be present:
- groom
- parents on both sides
- one sister if needed
Who must NOT be present:
- male relatives of the groom (brothers, uncles, cousins)
- large group of women
- neighbours or friends
Sunnah: The groom may see the bride directly to assess compatibility.
STEP 6 — Private but Supervised Conversation (5–10 minutes)
It is Sunnah for the bride and groom to speak in a supervised environment, not alone in a locked room, not exposed.
Examples:
- in a separate corner while families are nearby
- in a semi-private living room
- door open
They may respectfully discuss:
- values
- career plans
- Islamic commitments
- family expectations
- future goals
- compatibility questions
- temperaments and interests
Purpose: Mutual understanding, not romance.
STEP 7 — No Pressure to Decide Immediately
The visit ends simply.
No one should:
- demand an answer
- push the girl or boy to commit
- emotionally manipulate
- show disappointment or excitement
Both sides take time to think.
STEP 8 — Post-Visit Consultation & Family Discussion
Each side discusses:
- Deen
- Character
- Compatibility
- Values
- Temperament
- Long-term future
Focus is on akhlaq, not superficial details.
STEP 9 — Istikhara (Both Should Pray)
Sunnah recommendation:
- groom performs his own Istikhara
- bride performs her own Istikhara
Not the parents, not the imam—each individual seeking guidance.
Seek clarity, confidence, and calmness.
STEP 10 — Final Decision with Ikhlaas
Once Istikhara brings clarity:
- If both agree → give a positive response
- If one disagrees → politely decline
- No drama
- No ego
- No humiliation
- No pressure
Decision is based on deen, character, and compatibility, not on prestige or social comparison.
Summary (The Sunnah Spirit)
The Sunnah approach revolves around:
- modesty
- simplicity
- privacy
- dignity
- respect
- no showing off
- no crowding the bride
- no cultural exaggerations
- meaningful conversation
- seeking Allah’s guidance
